Memorialization is Facebook’s designated state for accounts of deceased users. A memorialized account:

  • Shows “Remembering” next to the user’s name.
  • Cannot be logged into.
  • Cannot be modified except by a designated legacy contact.
  • Is excluded from public spaces like “People you may know”.

Triggering memorialization

Memorialization is triggered by a death report submitted to Facebook with supporting documentation (often a death certificate or obituary).

When memorialization is wrong

In rare cases, memorialization is applied to a living person — usually through a malicious or mistaken report. Reversal requires:

  • Photo ID verification.
  • A clear, factual explanation.
  • (Sometimes) a video or live verification.

Cases typically resolve in 7–14 days when properly filed.

Family disputes

When a real death has occurred but family members dispute who has authority over the account, memorialization plus legacy-contact rules govern access. Without a pre-designated legacy contact, disputes often require legal documentation (probate, estate authority). See Facebook memorialized account help.
