Soft delete

Instagram and Facebook's grace-period state where a "deleted" account is still recoverable. Lasts 30 days before permanent purge.

Soft delete is the state a deleted Instagram or Facebook account enters for the first 30 days after deletion. Visually the account is gone — searches return “User not found”, URLs return 404 — but the data is preserved internally, awaiting either restoration or permanent purge.

During soft delete

The account can be restored by:

  • The original owner logging in with valid credentials (which sometimes triggers a “Restore account” prompt).
  • A restoration request through Meta’s help center, with identity verification.

After 30 days

The data is purged from active systems. Restoration after this point is rare, but not always impossible — some business or verified-account cases can still be revived through specific support channels with strong evidence.

Practical advice

If you deleted in frustration or a hacker deleted your account, the 30-day window is firm. Don’t wait. See Instagram deleted account recovery.
